Bolsonaro has been arrested after authorities determined he posed a definite escape threat while under house arrest.

The one-time leader was found guilty of orchestrating a government overthrow in September and handed more than 27 years in prison, but he remained under home detention pending legal challenges.

High Court Judge the presiding justice said the action to imprison the 70-year-old politician was a precautionary step after recent developments were revealed.

This encompassed seeking to disable his tracking device and a call for a demonstration that could enable a possible escape.

In a paperwork permitting the detention, the judge said data from the unit overseeing the former president's confinement suggested the one-time head of state's plan to remove the surveillance device to guarantee victory in his escape.

His offspring, Flávio, who serves as a senator, called for a assembly of his backers near his father's house to take place on Saturday evening.

Flávio Bolsonaro wrote on social media on the previous day: Will you battle for your country, or observe everything from your mobile device there on your couch? I urge you to struggle with us."

He said the demonstration would be so followers could "pray for his physical condition and for the return of democracy in our nation."

Context of Sentencing

Bolsonaro was convicted of heading a conspiracy aimed at keeping him in power after he failed to win the national vote to his political opponent, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva.

Top judicial officials said that he knew of a scheme which included plans to assassinate the current president and his vice-presidential running mate, Geraldo Alckmin, and to arrest and execute the presiding judge - the top judicial official who has been managing his judicial proceedings.

The conspiracy was prevented because it couldn't obtain the backing of the armed forces officials. Lula was sworn in without problem on January 1st, 2023.

But a week later, on 8 January, numerous Bolsonaro supporters stormed and vandalised government buildings in the capital, Brazil's capital.
